2006 Approved Projects still receiving funding:
Derbyshire Constabulary – £25k per year over 2 years A bid to fund a Community Support Officer, on the basis of a “buy one get one free” offer. The bid was made on the basis that the posts would be funded by the Police after the two years.
Cotmanhay Schools Breakfast Club - £4,413 Project from Cotmanhay Junior School to fund the cost of a breakfast club.
Emotional Health & Well Being - £10,832 Project delivered by Derbys County PCT to provide additional support to young people to increase knowledge and skills to enable effective conflict resolution and positive behaviour management, reducing the conflict experienced within the school environment and community. The bid will support the level 1 and 2 early intervention criteria – through evaluation of the project aim for mainstreaming the support through the “Derbyshire Children’s Plan”.

Community Sports Coach - £40,885
Funding for a Community Sports Coach, dedicated to working in Cotmanhay for 2 years from April 2007. £20,000 match funding was approved by the Community Investment Fund
Community Fire Safety Officer - £30,868
Match funding with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to employ a dedicated Community Fire Safety Officer for Cotmanhay. The aim of this post is to reduce deliberate fire setting provide fire safety advice and education and carry out home fire safety checks.
Arts in our Life - £4,000
Funding for Cotmanhay Junior School to hire artists and materials to provide a week of arts activities, including creating sculptures, writing and performing a play and songs, poetry and other creative activities. This culminated in a showcase event attended by parents and members of the community.
Ilkeston Festival - £3,270
Contribution to the running costs of the first inter – schools Ilkeston Arts Festival
Drop-in Centre – running costs - £3,696
Funding to commission Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire to help run the new youth drop in centre at the pavilion. The money also covered the costs of purchasing equipment for the centre such as computer games and sports equipment; more than 25 young people now regularly attend on Monday evenings.
Cotmanhay Advice Project - £1,707
Funding to cover a shortfall in funding to employ a debt counsellor based in Cotmanhay
Cotmanhay Junior School ICT - £2,999
A project to provide specialist computer equipment and a “tuff” digital camera to help children with special educational needs, such as dyslexia, take a full part in school life, increase their national curriculum levels and raise confidence and self esteem.
Cotmanhay Junior School Little Dragons - £1,900
This project provides Tai–Chi training to Year 6 pupils at Cotmanhay Junior School. The project has been a great success in the past with staff noticing improvements in children’s self discipline, self esteem and ability to work together in teams effectively.
This has also led to a noticeable improvement in children’s behaviour, particularly those that have had challenging behaviour in the past
Lottery Conference Monitor - £958
Funding for residents of Cotmanhay to attend a national conference explaining the changes to the Lottery’s funding of community projects.
Hopewell Farm Residents Group Office Equipment - £500
Funding to purchase office equipment and stationery to help the group continue it’s work informing and engaging with residents of Hopewell farm
Bennerley School Self-Defence - £480
Project to provide certified self defence training and self defence classes to 20 people. The course is open to all residents of the community and based at Bennerley School.
Introduction to Construction Training - £3,500
A pilot project to provide training and accreditation in construction industry skills to Cotmanhay residents. Initial course had 12 attendees of whom 10 gained the certification required to work. Further courses will be run throughout the year.
Cotmanhay Cobras On-going - £3,550
Additional funding to help with ongoing costs for the year to help keep this community based football team active.
Bennerley School Additional Support - £12,750
Bid to fund additional hours of work by the schools extended services co-ordinator
Bright Street Laundry - £11,220
Funded over two years contributing to the running costs of the popular and well used community laundry service run by Community Concern Erewash.
Luncheon Club - £15,235
Additional funding, again over two years, to help with staffing and supply costs for the luncheon club held at Cotmanhay Pavilion on Tuesdays and Fridays. Currently over 32 people regularly attend
Home Comforts Team - £64,570
Community Concern Erewash runs the Home Comforts Team from its base at the Symes Centre on Bright Street. This team provides services as varied as changing light bulbs and complete redecorating of homes. The aim of this service is to help people stay safe and independent in their own homes rather than needing social services assistance.
Falls Prevention Awareness Day - £500
Part funding for Age Concern Derby and Derbyshire to run an information and advice day for elderly residents including slipper exchange and chair based exercise
Renewal of Floor Covering Holy Trinity Church - £3,436
Purchase of new carpet tiles for Holy Trinity Church Hall to help improve hygiene and access for all members of the community
Enterprise Centre - Community and Learning Champion - £95,300
Spread over two years, this funding will allow the Enterprise Centre to expand its remit in offering high quality education and training to Cotmanhay residents. Staff will be able to go out and work in the community as well as offering further services from the centre.
Carrying the Can - £1,500
A joint project between Derbyshire Police and Bennerley School to produce a film which will highlight the problems caused by young people drinking alcohol and the associated problems such as crime, anti social behaviour, violence and arrest.
Improving Children’s Speech and Language Opportunities in Cotmanhay - £9,452
Project to purchase software and Speech and Language Therapist and school staff time at Cotmanhay Schools to work with children who have mild / moderate speech and language delay that is impacting on their literacy development
Bennerley Gym and Fitness Classes - £1,989
Funding to purchase extra equipment to improve facilities at Bennerley School Gym in order to make it more attractive for community use
Training Volunteers for Bennerley Gym - £5,895
Additional to the previous bid, this money will be used to train community volunteers to become qualified fitness instructors who will work at Bennerley school gym. This project has the added bonus of not only improving the skills and employability of local people but also ensuring that the gym is able to remain open for the benefit of the community.
Cotmanhay Christmas Lights - £11,303
Funding to install electrical connections and supply, install and remove Christmas lights for trees around the Community Centre site.
Community Music Suite - £11,695.88
Project to improve facilities at the current music centre by installing state of the art music production software and computers as well as new keyboards. This facility would also be available for community use
Training Volunteers for Bennerley Gym - £3,203 The funding enabled volunteers to attain training and qualifications towards instructing in fitness classes in both the gym and in main sports hall i.e. aerobics and pilates etc. The benefits to the community and the impact on their health and wellbeing is significant. It also gives individuals in the community the opportunity to develop themselves and give some support to the members of their community.
Caribbean Music Course - £300 A music course run at Bennerley School designed to build confidence in the young people and encourage positive links between the schools in the area, it promoted a buddy system between them and Bennerley Fields School .
Intro to Construction Training2 - £10,500 Following on from the successful pilot, this course provides candidates with work-ready skills and a passport into the construction industry via Health and Safety Training and CSCS cards. Interviews are also arranged and contact maintained to support the trainee into employment.
Freedom Programme Training Volunteers - £3000 The Freedom Programme provides a 12 week course in which the characteristics and beliefs of the domestic violence abuser are identified. The program examines the right to say no to sex and teaches recipients to value themselves and their bodies. The program is useful for victims and potential victims of all ages, including teenagers
Freedom Programme Dominator Books - £1,000 These books are for victims of Domestic Abuse in the Cotmanhay area. The content supports the delivery of the Freedom Programme.
Cotmanhay Neighbourhood Clean-up Day - £2,004 The clean up day promoted to residents in Cotmanhay the need to dispose of household rubbish properly and effectively. The day was an example of true partnership working as it was facilitated by officers from Three Valleys Housing along with Erewash Borough Council (Pride in Erewash and Environmental Services), Fire Service, PCSO, Groundwork Derbyshire, Young Rangers and the Probation Service. Approximately 22 skips of rubbish were removed on one day.
Home Comforts Team Garage/Workshop - £30,000 This was a capital build project to provide a new building enabling the Home Comforts Team to have their own space for meetings, training, and maintaining the equipment.
GEM Centre - £12,500 This project is a key part of Bennerley School’s forward plan for both Business and Enterprise development and extended services, aiming for total integration with the community and services therein to promote and develop better opportunities and raising the profile of the school and the services in area in general.
Promoting Confidence - £11,803 Erewash Mental Health Association Ltd run day centres for people suffering from long and enduring Mental Health problems. They seek to provide a supportive atmosphere in which people can come to relax and socialise or learn new skills. The funding provided laptops for members to use downstairs so no-one is excluded from the group. As they also have partially sighted people attending a large screen and a Braille keyboard were also supplied.
Cotmanhay Volunteers Help Against Debt Campaign - £14,554 The Cotmanhay Volunteers Help Against Debt Campaign will offer a training package to at least 6 local volunteers between January 2008 and March 2008. Firstly, the workers will train in how to provide budgeting skills and money management sessions to other people living in Cotmanhay. Secondly they will receive more technical training to guide local people with financial worries or who are in serious financial debt.
Cotmanhay Violent Crime and Criminal Damage Initiative - £3,700 Criminal Damage and Violent Crime is an issue for Cotmanhay. Analysis shows that the largest proportion of violence and criminal damage are alcohol/substance related particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings within this area. The majority of victims and offenders are males aged 18-24. The purpose of this project is to utilise technology to raise awareness amongst this age group, and provide capital equipment including the provision of alcohol and drug testing equipment to assist in the targeting of high risk groups. Increase the confidence of licensees in challenging those attempting to purchase age related products, including cigarettes, alcohol, petrol, solvents, knives etc.
Thrash The Trash - £2,790 A community event during February half-term offering eco-friendly creative activities on a budget. Workshops will focus on sustainable family and intergenerational learning, skills sharing and skills development, increased understanding and awareness of environmental issues and recycling and how to recognise and maximise the potential of existing resources and skills In a group setting.
Urban Music Programme - £3,304 The aim of this project is to engage & deliver 2 days of training during February half-term to the young people of Cotmanhay in the various aspects of Urban Music such as Dj-ing, Rapping (MC-ing), Dancing, Lyric Writing, & Performing.
Bereavement Counselling - £1,150 Bereavement counselling for Cotmanhay drop-in Centre: It had been felt by service providers that the young people of Cotmanhay needed some emotional support to deal with their reactions to the violent death of a local youth. The aim of the scheme will be to offer young people the chance to speak with trained professionals about their own personal reactions to this incident. We are also hoping that will provide the opportunity to talk about any other issues they may be facing them at that time.
Young Volunteers Programme - £1,102 The project will aim to help develop the confidence and communication skills of the young people. Young people from Bennerley school will participate in the volunteering and organisation of the annual Derby 10K, added to this they will work with local junior schools to deliver sporting activities as part of the Junior Sports Leader Award (JSL). The young people will be rewarded for their efforts by using this funding to take part in a fun day and give the opportunity to engage with the staff and people who will be involved in the day. The activity will be at Doncaster Dome during the half term break.
Cotmanhay Junior School ICT Project - £1,934 Continuation of Special Educational Needs IT provision
Home Fire Safety Education Campaign - £2,846 In liaison with the Hopewell Farm Residents Committee initially, then rolling out to the rest of Cotmanhay, the Home Fire Safety Education Project aims to provide every single household in Cotmanhay with this free service.
Properties having no smoke detectors or inadequate numbers will be provided free 10yr units. Properties having existing systems will be thoroughly educated on all aspects of Home Fire Safety as will the group above.
The aims of the project are:
· Decrease in domestic fires in Cotmanhay · Higher smoke detector ownership · Reduction in number of accident, falls in the home · A fire-aware community · Increase of number of fires where the fire is contained to it’s room of origin
Future Footprints - £9,600 Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire will be running a project entitled Future Footprints. This project has drawn in £21,000 for 08/09 and will offer volunteering opportunities for 10 young people from Cotmanhay. The theme for the project will centre on climate change, and will see young people take action in support of environmental issues. The young people will carry out a carbon Footprint assessment of a community building and plan activities that will help reduce its carbon emissions. The pavilion building has already been identified as an obvious choice for this process due to its use by young people as a youth Drop In centre.
Sensory Garden – Hazelwood Residential Home - £6,700 This project has been put forward by the Ilkeston Round Table and the aim is to provide a Sensory Garden to improve the quality of life to the residents and rehab unit and visitors friends and family. The project will be introducing skills to men and women on probation through the Broomfield College and has been supported and match-funded by many local businesses.
Security Fencing for Booths Field – Ilkeston Town Juniors FC - £3,000 This funding will provide a secure perimeter fence around the changing and storage facilities which are currently being vandalised, thereby preventing their use by home and visiting junior football teams.
Wireless CCTV - £15,000 This project has benefits to the community in many ways; not only reducing incidents of crime and disorder and providing a deterrent but it also serves as a method to reduce people’s fear about crime and disorder, thus helping them to feel safer in their communities. It also provides visible evidence that partner agencies are aware of problems in specific areas and are working together to reduce these.
Ironing System Bright Street Laundry - £800 Provision of Industrial Ironing System to enable laundry to become more efficient
